Understand the Terrain Before You Design
Ground levels, contours and site features captured to support planning, drainage and engineering design.
01Overview
Topographic surveying captures relevant ground levels, terrain features and selected natural or man-made features within a defined area. The resulting information supports site planning, engineering design, drainage assessment and development decisions.
Design decisions made without accurate terrain data often lead to costly redesign, unplanned earthworks or drainage problems later in a project. A well-scoped topographic survey gives architects, engineers and developers a reliable picture of the site as it is today, in formats that move directly into CAD and GIS workflows.
02Service scope
- Ground elevation and spot-level surveys
- Contour mapping
- Identification and mapping of visible site features
- Site boundary and feature integration where instructed
- Terrain and surface representation
- Preparation of topographic plans and digital drawings
- Data preparation for GIS and engineering design workflows
03Applications
- Building development
- Road planning
- Drainage design
- Land development
- Earthworks planning
- Infrastructure projects
04Potential deliverables
- Contour plans
- Spot levels
- Coordinate lists
- Digital terrain data
- CAD drawings
- GIS-compatible files
Final outputs are subject to the agreed scope, contour interval and output formats.
05What to provide
Sharing this information with your request helps us scope the work accurately and respond faster.
- Site location and approximate area
- Intended use of the survey (design, drainage, earthworks, planning)
- Preferred output format (for example DWG, DXF, PDF or GIS formats)
- Any available site plans or design drawings
- Required level of detail, such as contour interval or features to capture
06Scope considerations
Before you commission this service
Topographic surveys record visible surface features and measured levels within the agreed area. Underground services, features obscured by dense vegetation or structures, and areas without safe access may not be captured unless specifically included in the scope.
07Common questions
What contour interval will I receive?
The contour interval is agreed with you based on the terrain, the size of the site and how the data will be used. Design-grade work generally needs a closer interval than early planning studies.
Can the data go straight into our design software?
Yes, where the required format is agreed in advance. We prepare CAD drawings and GIS-compatible files so your design team can work with the data directly.
